Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on the Road

Riggs Ward Design revived the VMFA’s historic Artmobile program, designing the inaugural exhibit, How Far Can Creativity Take You? Originally launched in 1953, the Artmobile was one of the first museum-on-wheels programs in the world, circulating 60 exhibitions and reaching over 2.5 million people before being retired in the early 1990s. RWD’s redesign reimagines this iconic outreach tool for contemporary audiences.

The exhibit features works by twelve fellows represented in the museum’s permanent collection, highlighting their journeys fueled by passion, creativity, and the support of the VMFA Fellowship Program. Selected works reflect the diverse backgrounds of the fellows while emphasizing a strong sense of place rooted in Virginia.

The new Artmobile brings art directly to communities across the state, combining dynamic presentation and accessibility to engage visitors from the Atlantic Coast to the Appalachians and beyond.
