Riggs Ward Design created This is Richmond, Virginia for The Valentine’s reopening after major renovations, crafting an exhibit that tells the story of the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and people. The design challenges traditional museum approaches by combining conventional artifacts with intangible cultural narratives, presenting multiple histories through a unifying lens: the city itself.

The exhibit’s visual identity is anchored by the color red, creating striking contrasts against bright white walls and clean lighting while guiding visitor sightlines throughout the space. Repeating lines, cohesive branded colors, and balanced spatial composition ensure no single element dominates, reinforcing a sense of unity across the gallery. Every detail was carefully considered, from custom artifact mounts and thoughtfully crafted exhibit text to a hand-painted floor map of Richmond by local artist Nancy Beck, which provides a unique, immersive foundation for visitors to explore the city.

Through this blend of color, narrative, and innovative presentation, This is Richmond, Virginia invites audiences to connect with the city’s plural histories in an accessible, engaging, and visually compelling experience.
