Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum
Riggs Ward Design created the permanent exhibition for the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum using a “one story, one thousand stories” approach to connect visitors with the lived experiences behind the Valley’s Civil War history. The exhibit is designed to resonate with both casual visitors and dedicated Civil War enthusiasts, grounding major events in the personal accounts and voices of the people who witnessed them.
The experience is intentionally image and artifact driven, relying on powerful visuals and ob-jects rather than dense text to convey the era’s complexity. Seven primary sections wrap the perimeter of the gallery, while the central hall houses temporary and rotating exhibits that expand on the museum’s storytelling throughout the year.
For the nearby James R. Wilkins Exhibit Hall, we designed an immersive projection-mapped battle map illustrating the Civil War engagement that took place in Winchester, Virginia. In-stalled within the theater room, the animation is motion-activated, beginning automatically as visitors enter the space. The projected sequence is cast onto a sculpted topographic surface that reflects the region’s hills and valleys, allowing the landscape itself to become part of the storytelling and adding a sense of geographic realism to the unfolding battle. Ac-companying the projection, a monitor presentation narrates the events in greater detail, synchronizing with the animation while incorporating historic photographs and additional context. Together, these elements provide visitors with both a dramatic overview and a deeper understanding of the battle as it plays out across the terrain.
