Riggs Ward Design reimagined the exhibits at Three Lakes Park and Nature Center to create an immersive, hands-on experience that highlights the native ecosystems of Henrico County. The redesigned gallery helps visitors explore the region’s plants, animals, and geological history while demonstrating the natural relationships among air, land, and water.

The space combines live animal habitats with interactive exhibits that encourage curiosity and discovery. A dramatic rock wall anchors the gallery and is inset with aquariums featuring local freshwater species. One of the most popular elements is the interactive sand pit, where an overhead light reacts to the movement of the sand and generates real-time topography. Visitors can shape valleys, rivers, lakes, and mountains, making abstract environmental concepts immediately understandable and engaging.

Sensory-friendly features, including optional sensory bags, support visitors who may need tools to feel more comfortable while exploring active areas like the sand pit. Additional exhibits highlight Virginia’s prehistoric past, nocturnal wildlife, and seasonal ecosystems, while rotating displays curated by Nature Center staff ensure ongoing learning. With its thoughtful blend of live animals, environmental design, and interactive interpretation, the Nature Center offers a welcoming and educational experience for the entire community.
