Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Museum
RWD worked with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation on designing a permanent exhibit for their Civil War Museum. The exhibit relates the Shenandoah Valley’s Civil War history to contemporary visitors through the experiences and words of the people who lived through it. The exhibit is designed to engage the casual visitor and “accidental tourist” as well as the Civil War buff on a personal, human level, through artifacts, individual stories, and quotations.
The exhibit is heavy on imagery and artifacts, with less textual content than traditional exhibits. To show historical events, including major battles, the exhibit focuses on personal accounts. The exhibit is divided into seven main sections around the perimeter of the gallery space. The interior hall, which houses temporary, rotating exhibits, lies at the core inside the perimeter walkways.
